Who'd have thought Stallone would come out of straight-to-DVD Hell and grace the big screens once again with his chiseled features?  But with the success of Rocky Balboa and the promise of John Rambo, Stallone has seen his stock rise and is striking while the iron is hot.  And no, there was no serious talk about an Over the Top sequel, but can you imagine?

It's been announced that his next project is a remake of the classic revenge flick Death Wish, that starred Charles Bronson.  And not only will Stallone be in front of the camera, but behind it as well. His deal with MGM will have him directing the film from a script written (or re-written) by Michael Ferris and John Brancato (Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines and Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins).

More after the jump!

Evidently this is just one example of MGM's long-term plan to "assemble tentpoles based on a 4,100-title library that encompasses post-1985 MGM fare plus UA, Orion, Polygram, Samuel Goldwyn and Cannon titles."

In other words, remake a bunch of old movies instead of trying to come up with original ideas.  I guess we already knew that was going on, but it's interesting to hear a studio actually spell it out as a coordinated effort.
