The Morning Roundup: B.O. report, Watchmen fight, Shia in the Buff

Written by: Phoebe Raven, CC2K Staff Writer

ImageThis morning we have the Box Office report in the wake of the final Olympics weekend, news on the WB/FOX quibble over Watchmen and Shia LaBeouf working in the buff.

Let's start this off with the Weekend Box Office Report:

Few people wanted to go out to the movies this weekend, the Olympics in Bejing were still on after all, and they brought happy smiles to all the people at NBC.

The people who did go to the movies, mostly saw Tropic Thunder, which managed to nip the top spot at the box office the second week in a row, only the third movie to do so this summer. House Bunny lured in the ladies tired of sport and finished second.

The remake of Death Race 2000, Death Race, came in third, earning $12.3 million.

TDK in 4th is inching closer to $400 mill US domestic intake.

And it is doing well overseas too. The new Batman installment launched Thursday in Germany to a solid $9.2 million (keep in mind we only have 86 million people compared to an American 300 million). The combined international intake for TDK is now $381.1 million, making it a Seabiscuit in the race for “Combined worldwide grossing”.

And don’t ask me to explain why the ABBA-movie Mamma Mia is still doing so well in Europe. It makes no sense to me either.

ImageOn to movies yet to be released, or not:

Comicbookmovie.com has started a petition to try and save the Watchmen movie. Warner Bros. And FOX are currently up in arms as to who owns the rights to it. Should FOX really go through with more legal action, Comics2Film.com is calling for a boycott of FOX’s films.

Freshly back from surgery on his hand, Shia LaBeouf was getting nekkid and dirty for the new Transformers movie over the weekend and we have pictures, courtesy of JustJared. The Beef was also spotted smoking. I can hear the teenage girls now: “Eww!”

International collaboration “New York, I Love You” will premiere in a few weeks at the Toronto Film Festival, before its theatrical release in February 2009, but you can watch the trailer below.

Among the collaborators invited by the movie’s creator Emmanuel Benbihy are Fatih Akin (director from Germany), Yvan Attal, Allen Hughes, Shunji Iwai, Scarlett Johansson, Shekhar Kapur (filling in for the late Anthony Minghella), Joshua Marston, Mira Nair, Natalie Portman, Brett Ratner and oh so many more.

And for all of the people not remotely interested in the moving picture, we have great news from the world of literature:

This holiday season, there will be an exciting new biography out to keep you from finishing your gift shopping. Michael Phelps has signed a deal to pen a book about his success in Bejing, entitled “Built to Succeed”. Nothing like reliving the glorious days of the Summer Olympics to keep you warm on a winter’s night.
