In a surprising announcement, DC has declared it will be canceling three books from the Batman family, including Robin, Nightwing, and Birds of Prey. The last issues will hit stands in February, putting an end to these series that have been running since 1994, 1996, and 1999 respectively.
This comes hot off the cancellation of Catwoman, though that series was still in its infancy compared to these long running titles. DC has not yet stated the reason for the cancellation, though it can be assumed to be one of two things: sales, obviously, or the outcomes of Grant Morrison's "Batman RIP", as well as the decidedly non-Morrison "Battle for the Cowl" are so devastating in some way resulting in either the complete execution of these series or perhaps a relaunch. Or, there is always the possibility of three completely new titles, Bat-related or not.
Time will tell, and while all of the aforementioned series have had their ups and downs, there is no doubt that the characters involved are some of the most fan-revered of all time, and it wouldn't surprise us too much to see them popping up a thousand times more often elsewhere.
