Music

So, I’ve been hearing about the 120 Minutes archive for a while and always kept meaning to check it out, but life has this way of getting in the way. Well I finally snuck in some time and really dove into the archive, and man, it is awesome. I searched for all those videos that I only vaguely remembered and for the most part wasn’t disappointed (though there are a few instances where the linked videos aren’t the actual videos). This took me back to being 12 years old and feeling like I was discovering the world.

Why the Wires :: Flame Failures :: Jetsam-Flotsam & One Percent Press

This starts off like a show, it feels like you are standing in a dark room and listening live. Why the Wires’ Flame Failures is not like anything else I listen to or have reviewed. I had a bit of a hard time putting my finger on just what to say about them. I did find myslef wondering if this is what post-punk is. I have never really been able to define that style concept.

Free Children of Earth :: Terminal Stasis :: Cricket Cemetery Records

Man, I kinda love these guys and don’t know what to say about them. I was never a huge hardcore kid  - and when I was it was the likes of Ignite and Bane, you know, with solid hook. But I did go to a lot of hard core shows, just because my local scene growing up was solidly split down the middle between pop punk and hardcore. So hardcore reminds me of some of my best friends, some of the best shows I went to, some of the best times, even if I never really got into the music.

The Max Levine Ensemble :: Backlash Baby :: Lame-O Records and Rumbletowne Records

The Max Levine Ensemble’s Backlash Baby is a damn great time. From the opening chords you will be moving. And it won’t be until you are already engrossed this album that you will realize that the lyrics are actually saying something important. Sometimes pop punk falls into the catch all category or break up and skate songs (which I endlessly love) but Backlash Baby has a poppy and catchy sound, with heavy opinions. The tracks are full of great references and 10 cent words. I have always loved learning things from music, I think it was Bad Religion who taught me what misanthropic meant and The Max Levine Ensemble will be having you looks up some things.

Aree and the Pure Hearts :: Heart Songs

I fell in love with Heart Songs immediately. The feeling that this album creates is one of the reasons that I write about music.Each song has a raw soul bearing quality that musicians strive for and the honesty that creates the raw connection with the audience.

Show Review :: Mr. Small’s Funhouse :: Restorations, Pianos Become Teeth, mewithoutYou, and The Menzingers :: November 24, 2015

Last week was one of the final tour dates for Restorations, Pianos Become Teeth, mewithoutYou, and The Menzingers. With a few days before Thanksgiving and students returning home to see their families (and needing to escape those families) the building was pretty full for a cold Tuesday night.

Radiohearts :: Lot to Learn

Written by

Radiohearts :: Lot to Learn

I think what I love best about is how natural their sound is. Their self described hybrid of Elvis Costello, The Jam, and the Buzzcocks is not only spot on, but sounds like it would be a weird forced jumble. Radiohearts are nothing of the sort, their sounds is smooth, authentic, and alluring. Like how is a band able to have all of the great dark, dankness of Brit pop, add some sunny 50’s surf pop, and filter it through an alternative/punk screen and come out on the right side? I honestly have no idea, but Radiohearts have done it perfectly.

Teaheads :: If You’re June, I’m November :: Rad Dad Records

It seems that Flint Michigan is trying it’s damndest to have a resurgence, from the community, to art to music, more and more I am seeing “Flit” in bios.

Gnarwolves :: Adolescence :: Pure Noise Records

New fucking Gnarwolves! I don’t remember when, but I fell in love with these guys instantly. They have such a classic sound, voice, and attitude. Everything that I love about punk, so when I heard that they were coming out with a new album I was equally anxious and excited.
