It was reported a while back that Tim Burton was teaming with Disney to bring his old animated short, Frankenweenie back to life in a new 3-D version. It’s been announced today that this is just one half of a deal for Burton to direct a new vision of Alice in Wonderland that will combine the technology of performance capture imagery (used in the newly released Beowulf) with live-action footage.

The script was written by Linda Woolverton (The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast). No word yet on if Helena Bonham Carter will be cast as the villainous Queen of Hearts, but I consider it only a matter of time before she’s at least considered for the part. She would certainly be a great choice.

Burton is currently finishing up Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, with plans to begin production on Alice early next year. Production on Frankenweenie will follow.
