Gerard Butler won't be Snake Plissken.  While the actor who recently saw his stock take a meteoric rise after the success of 300 signed to star in the role made famous by Kurt Russell in John Carpenter's Escape from New York, he has left before filming on the remake even started.

He has cited creative differences as the cause for the split.  New Line is attempting to move forward, bringing in Jonathon Mostow (Breakdown, U-571, Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines) to rewrite the script.  The production company has also given him the option to direct.

No word yet on who might replace Butler as Plissken.
