Carson McNight’s Top 10 Movies of 2007

Carson McNight looked back at 2007 and saw a year packed with big entertainment. From giant, anthropomorphic, morphing robots to magic princesses to a gaggle of horny teenagers, McNight will remember 2007 as the year when we learned who Michael Cera is and were reminded who Peter Cullen is (hint: he was the voice of Fred on Scooby-Doo and of a certain robotic hero).
Here follow McNight's top 10 movies of 2007.
Black Snake Moan (March 2) – Brilliant performances by Samuel L. Jackson and Christina Ricci put this movie in the Top 10. And the soundtrack was pretty kickin’ as well.
Blades of Glory (March 30) – Not a fantastic movie but certainly one of the funniest I saw. Will Ferrell and Jon Heder are good, but Will Arnett and Amy Poehler steal the show.
Waitress (May 2) – A wonderful indie film in which Keri Russell and Nathan Fillion shine. The better of the two unwanted pregnancy movies of the year.
Ocean’s Thirteen (June 8) – A return to form for the Clooney crew as they try to put Ocean’s 12 behind them. This film was wonderfully shot and provided just the right amount of “Sting-ness” we wanted to see from our favorite crooks.
Live Free or Die Hard (June 27) – As we breathed a sigh of relief when we saw that Justin Long wasn't actually that bad, we also noticed that this movie brought back some of the fun and action we wanted to see in action movies. It might have been a little hard to believe old John McLean could get through all of that at his age, but hey, movies are about suspension of disbelief.
Ratatouille (June 29) – I’d like to just write “Pixar. ‘Nuff said.” But I feel that might leave out why this Pixar may have been the best yet. The animation was better than ever, the story was a classic, and Peter O’Toole took this one to the next level.
Transformers (July 3) – What can I say; I’m a sucker for nostalgia. I loved seeing all my old friends from the cartoons in live action with Shia LaBeouf and even more with Megan Fox! Wow! This is another high-octane action movie that delivered where it needed too, even if it was 30 minutes too long.
Stardust (August 10) – This fun, light movie is often compared to The Princess Bride, and with good cause. Both are fairy-tale type movies that keep a good sense of humor about themselves and have some great cameos. While Stardust couldn’t quite live up to the standard set by TPB it does come close and should be applauded for doing so.
Superbad (August 17) – This is one that couldn’t be left off the list. While it is may be argued that it’s a stupid comedy, I would say it’s a stupid comedy by smart writers. They knew what was funny and just how much toilet humor you need to enrapture the guys and keep the girls watching. It had heart, plot, and McLovin.
Beowulf (November 16) – Makes the list because it’s the best telling of the story so far, or at least approximate telling of the story. The animation is stunning, but it must be viewed in 3-D. In my opinion a much better epic movie than 300.
