Hugh Jackman's upcoming solo Wolverine project has a title and a release date: X-Men Origins: Wolverine will his theaters on May 1, 2009.

We ran a review of the script for this movie back in June, but the mean old 20th Century Fox legal department made us take it down.  I reviewed the script myself, and I liked it a lot.

As for this new movie, Variety reports that Live Schreiber is in talks to play a younger version of Stryker,  the best new character to emerge from X-Men 2. Shakespearean badass Brian Cox originated the role.

Director Gavin Hood (Rendition) will start shooting the new Wolverine movie in Australia before moving on to New Zealand and New Orleans. (Variety speculated that the New Orleans setting meant an appearance for Gambit. Maybe there's a new draft of the script out there.)

I'm intrigued by the title, which promises a series of origin-style pictures about the X-Men characters.
