Kimberly Pierce Wants to Bring About the End of Childhood

Kimberly Pierce (Boys Don’t Cry, Stop Loss) is reportedly pitching an adaptation of the Arthur C. Clarke sci-fi classic, Childhood’s End. MTV is reporting that Pierce has a script adaptation she’s presented to Universal Pictures, with a $70 million budget attached.

Written in 1953, Childhood’s End puts a twist on the alien invasion story by having the visitors from another world act more like Vulcans than Klingons (hopefully you get my Star Trek analogy). If that seems like it’s been done before, remember that Clarke wrote this in 1953, so he probably did it before anyone else.

Regardless, they help prolong life, end wars and bring peace to humanity. Their presence brings forward a new age of human evolution, and children born thereafter possess heightened mental abilities such as telekinesis and telepathy.

Who knows if this will actually get greenlit? (rhetorical question)

There’s certainly potential here, as we all know Stanley Kubrick brought another of Clarke’s classics to the screen with 2001: A Space Odyssey. Not that I’m equating Pierce with Kubrick; it remains to be seen if a director known for personal dramas could successfully adapt such a seemingly grand tale.
