Meryl Streep will portray the one-and-only Julia Child in the upcoming film, Julie & Julia.  The movie is based on the book, Julie and Julia: 365 Days, 524 Recipes, 1 Tiny Apartment Kitchen written by Julie Powell.  Nora Ephron (When Harry Met Sally, Sleepless in Seattle, You've Got Mail) is adapting the screenplay and is attached to direct with hopes to start production in 2008.

The story centers on a temp secretary (to be played by Amy Adams, star of Disney's upcoming Enchanted) frustrated with her life who decides to embark on a year long culinary journey of attempting every single recipe in Julia Child's famous cookbook, Mastering the Art of French Cooking.  She keeps a blog during the effort that attracts quite a bit of attention from people in the culinary world.

So to put this in context, Streep will play Obi Wan Kenobi to Adams' Luke Skywalker, but with spatulas instead of lightsabers.Wink
