The Oscars aren't going to be canceled, but they might get a downgrade, and by "get a downgrade" I mean they "might suck."

Here's the deal: The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is moving forward with plans for an Oscar telecast. That means they'll either forge a new agreement with the WGA to free up some writers for the gig, or … something else will happen.

Variety speculated that the "something else" would be presenters writing their own speeches and a telecast that would be generally go off by the seat of its pants.

But I've heard complaints about non-writers writing anything for entertainment purposes. Jay Leno has received some flak for coming up with his own monologues, and even if this alternative Oscar telecast goes through, many actors might still want to avoid the WGA picket lines – and the ceremony altogether.
