Review: Down at Fraggle Rock

Written by: Gary M. Kenny, CC2K Comics Editor

ImageI’m a child from the 80s and because of this i grew up with the magic of Jim Henson. Thus, Fraggle Rock holds a special place in my heart. If you’re not familiar with these colorful rodents, I ask you, can you dance your cares away? Put your worry off for another day. Will you let the music play? If you can do all this, Jim Henson and Archaia comics invite you to come down at Fraggle Rock.

This massive collection contains the first three Fraggle Rock comics (bonus: plus the Free Comic Book day story). It also contains a forward by an original puppeteer of the hit show: Karen Prell. Karen talks about what it was like to work with the Fraggles, what Jim Henson was like and how excited everyone who worked on the show felt about the this huge graphic novel. “Many people who were not much bigger than Fraggles when the show first aired are now at an age when they can pass those joyfully wrapped ideals (from the show) on to their children or anyone else who will find them entertaining and thought-provoking.” Karen’s forward really grasped the ideals of the show. It was a different kind of children’s show compared to Sesame Street or Mr. Rogers. Fraggle Rock took real life problems from a child’s perspective and made it entertaining and fun for the viewer to see how the Fraggles found a solution.

This graphic novel also contains a bios page of all the Fraggle characters. A page teaching you how to draw a Fraggle and because it’s an all ages book, in the back they have activity pages like pencil mazes and how to make a stamp from an apple. As a collection this book has everything a Fraggle Rock enthusiast would want, well they are missing the McDonald’s happy meal toys from way back in the day. Archaia and Jim Henson grabbed lots of great artists for this book and really captured the shows essence and the Henson magic. I’d recommend this if you have children or are a child from the 80s just like me.
