In an effort to increase international appeal (read: sell more tickets overseas) it was announced a while back that the upcoming live-action adaptation of the G.I. Joe line of toys would be updated to a multi-national force based in Europe that would fight global terrorism. The name G.I. Joe was even going to be updated to an acronym for "Global Integrated Joint Operating Entity."

Soon after the outcry from fanboys who felt such change was unacceptable echoed round the internet. Well, worry no longer. Hasbro has issued the following statement regarding the G.I. Joe movie:

"This movie will be a modern telling of the “G.I. Joe vs. Cobra” storyline and its compelling characters that Hasbro created 25 years ago. The G.I. Joe team will not be based in Brussels. Instead, they will be based out of the “Pit” as they were throughout the 1980s comic book series."

Read more after the jump. Hasbro also said,

"G.I. Joe is a very important property to Hasbro and we thank all of our fans for their enthusiasm." (Read: We’re acquiescing to your demands; please stop inundating us with hate mail.)

"The name “G.I. Joe” will always be synonymous with bravery and heroism. ..Duke, the lead character and head of the G.I. Joe team, will embody the values of bravery and heroism that the first generation of G.I. Joe figures established."

Well I’m glad that’s been cleared up. But will George Clooney really be embodying those values as Duke?

Hasbro was silent on that issue.

Here’s some classic G.I. Joe cheesy goodness:
