The Morning Roundup: Why Shatner was left out of Star Trek, Ghostbusters 3 News, Rumors Debunked!

Written by: Big Ross, CC2K Staff Writer

ImageThis morning we've got lots of rumors that have been shot down, word from Abrams himself as to why Shatner won't be in his new Star Trek film, new trailers, and an offical release date for Far Cry 2.

Want to know why J.J. Abrams isn't putting Bill Shatner in his new Star Trek movie?  Here ya go:

"It was very tricky. We actually had written a scene with him in it that was a flashback kind of thing, but the truth is, it didn't quite feel right. The bigger thing was that he was very vocal that he didn't want to do a cameo. We tried desperately to put him in the movie, but he was making it very clear that he wanted the movie to focus on him significantly, which, frankly, he deserves. The truth is, the story that we were telling required a certain adherence to the Trek canon and consistency of storytelling. It's funny — a lot of the people who were proclaiming that he must be in this movie were the same people saying it must adhere to canon. Well, his character died on screen. Maybe a smarter group of filmmakers could have figured out how to resolve that."

In what might be one of the longest on-again, off-again development histories, there is word that Ghostbusters 3 is back on.

Oh, those rumors about Will Smith being offered the role of Captain America?  Completely untrue.

Let's keep talking rumors, because there seem to be so many circulating right now.  Michael Caine has stated that apparently he was talking to a WB exec and they informed him PSH will be brought in as The Penguin and Johnny Depp as The Riddler for the next Batman film.  Of course, Batman 3 isn't even official yet, and Hoffman and Depp have both struck down the rumor, and you've got to believe that if Chris Nolan is involved, he's going to be making the story decisions and then the casting decisions.

Here's another rumor.   Have you heard how Republican VP nominee Sarah Palin keeps claiming she said "thanks, but no thanks to that Bridge to Nowhere"?  Well, the facts remain that as mayor of Wasilla, Palin hired a lobbyist and traveled to Washington annually to support earmarks for the town totaling $27 million, and while Palin notes she rejected plans to build a $398 million bridge from Ketchikan to an island with 50 residents and an airport, that opposition came only after the plan was ridiculed nationally as a "bridge to nowhere."  Sorry to get all political on you in the middle of a roundup, but hey, even Microsoft is getting into it, as they've announced an informal election poll on Xbox Live .  So ya know, get informed, get involved, and vote.  [BR steps down from soap box.]

Hey, Spike Lee is going to make a sequel to Inside Man, which will "continue the relationship between the two main characters but in a new high-tension situation."  Now word yet on if Denzel Washington and Clive Owen will reprise their roles.

In gaming news the highly anticipated sequel to the hit FPS Far Cry has gotten on official release date from Ubisoft of October 21, 2008.

Remember when it was reported that Angelina Jolie was replacing Tom Cruise in the spy-thriller Edwin A. Salt?  Well, IGN has learned she might be backing out of the project, due to the recent birth of her twins causing a schedule conflict.

Here's the trailer for Soul Men, which is the last film to star the late Bernie Mac:

And here's the trailer for Confessions of a Shopaholic:
